CWU Physics Department to Host Northwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP)

Physics is about doing. Women in the CWU Physics Department apply what they are learning in the laboratory, in the K-12 classroom and with the general public. Our students think critically to solve problems on the frontiers of physics. In recent years, CWU women physics students have developed a computational model for neural regenerative treatment, studied runaway stars, investigated prion protein functions, and tested how to best ignite rocket fuel. While women earn around 20% of bachelor’s degrees in the United States annually, our department has made a special commitment to increasing the participation of women and other underrepresented groups. We strive to support all of our students as they develop their professional skills and explore rewarding career opportunities.

In 2022, the CWU Physics Department will host the northwest regional Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP). The goal of CUWiP is to help undergraduate women thrive in physics by gaining a sense of belonging and learning about career opportunities. At CUWiP conferences, women in a variety of physics-related professions speak with students on topics ranging from cutting-edge research to professional negotiation skills. For many years, students from our department have attended this valuable conference at other schools and have come away with new professional contacts and a fresh sense of excitement about how they will contribute to the field of physics.

With 40% of our department staff identifying as female and a growing number of female majors, the CWU physics department is well qualified to provide this opportunity to female physics majors from the Pacific Northwest.
